Base Oil

Description

2-Ethylhexyl esters, also known as octyl esters, have several applications in lubricants:

  • 2-Ethylhexyl oleate:

Used as a base oil in some lubricants

  • Dimer acid 2-ethylhexyl esters (DA 2-EH esters):

Can be used as additives in base oils and have good solubility in commercial base stocks like polyalpha olefin (PAO-6) and high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSuO). They also have a kinematic viscosity that is three to eight times higher than PAO-6.

  • 2-Ethylhexyl laurate:

A branched saturated fatty acids ester that can be used in lubricants and greases. It is a clear liquid at room temperature with a melting point of around -30 ºC.

2-Ethylhexyl esters also have other applications, such as:

  • 2-EH stearate:

Used as a plasticizer for synthetic and natural rubber, and as a release agent

  • 2-EH palmitate:

A common ingredient in lipsticks, lip moisturizers, skin moisturizers, body lotions, and other health and beauty care products

  • 2-EH cocoate:

Has limited applications in the lubricants industry
