Description
Glycerol ester of wood rosin (GEWR) is an oil-soluble food additive also known as glyceryl abeitate or ester gum. It is most commonly used to keep oils in suspension in water
Glycerol esters are used as lubricants in a variety of applications, including engine oils, cosmetics, and plastic additives. For example, a patent from 1987 describes a lubricating oil composition for gasoline or diesel engines that contains a mineral oil with about 0.20 weight percent of a glycerol partial ester. Another study from 2003 found that glycerin fatty acid esters can be useful as tabletting lubricants. The study compared two types of triglycerin behenate with different degrees of esterification to Mg-St and a sucrose fatty acid ester. The study found that the glycerol fatty acid esters provided better tablet hardness than Mg-St when the lubricant content, mixing time, and tabletting pressure were changed.
Glycerol esters are created by reacting glycerol with various fatty acids to produce mono-, di-, or tri-esters. Glycerol can come from plant oils and is also a byproduct of the bio-diesel process.
Glycerol esters are used as lubricants, emulsifiers, and anti-static agents in a broad range of applications such as engine oils, cosmetics, and plastic additives.
