Base Oil

Description

Ethylhexyl esters are used in lubricants as base oils and emollients:

  • 2-ethylhexyl (octyl) esters

These esters are used in lubricants as base oils and as emollients in creams, lotions, and lipsticks. They can also be used in refrigeration and compressor oils.

  • Dimer acid 2-ethylhexyl esters (DA 2-EH esters)

These esters have potential applications as biolubricant additives and can be used in base oils and additives. They have good solubility in commercial base stocks such as polyalpha olefin (PAO-6) and high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSuO). They also have a kinematic viscosity that is three to eight times higher than a commercial base stock, PAO-6.

  • 2-ethylhexyl oleate

This ester is a branched mono-saturated fatty acid ester that is mainly obtained from palm oil. It is a clear liquid at room temperatures with a melting point around -20 ºC. It has industrial uses in lubricants and greases, adhesives and sealants, polishes and waxes, textile treatment products and dyes, and polymers.
