Base Oil

Description

Phthalates are a group of aromatic chemicals that are used to make plastics more flexible and resilient, and are often referred to as plasticizers. They are colorless, odorless, oily liquids that are used in many products, including:

  • Plastics

Phthalates are used to make plastics more durable, primarily polyvinyl chloride (PVC or vinyl).

  • Cosmetics and personal care products

Phthalates are used as solvents and stabilizers in perfumes and other fragrance preparations, and are found in nail polishes, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, cleansers, and shampoos.

  • Other products

Phthalates are also used in shower curtains, food containers, lotions, disposable gloves, tubes, catheters, and blood bags.

Phthalates can be dangerous to pregnant women and babies, and may pose risks to the development of the reproductive system, brain, and other organs. Due to the broad range of phthalate derivatives and the complexity by which they interact with normal physiology and undergo metabolism in the human body, many research questions remain regarding the safety and morbidity associated with exposure to phthalates.

To minimize exposure to phthalates, you can try: Avoiding vinyl toys, Choosing fragrance-free products whenever possible, Not using plastic containers in microwaves, and Sweating regularly through aerobic exercise
