Base Oil

Description

Pentaerythritol esters are used in lubricants because they have better lubricating properties than other esters due to their higher viscosity index. They also have a wider viscosity range, better low temperature flow characteristics, and higher oxidative and thermal stability than natural esters. Pentaerythritol esters can be used in a variety of lubricants, including:

  • Vegetable oil-based lubricants

Pentaerythritol rosin ester (PRE) is an environmentally friendly additive that can be used in vegetable oil-based lubricants. PRE is synthesized by esterifying abietic acid and pentaerythritol.

  • Aircraft engine lubricants

Pentaerythritol esters containing diacid pentaerythritol complex esters have improved viscosity-temperature performance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, and better tribological properties. This makes them a potential candidate for use in 5 mm2/s EE aircraft engine lubricants.

  • Industrial gear oils

Pentaerythritol tetraoleate ester has been studied as a base stock for formulating extreme pressure (EP) type of industrial gear oil VG-68.

  • Battery immersion coolants

Pentaerythritol esters can reduce power consumption by 55.4% compared to mineral oil at a flow rate of 0.045 kg/s. They also have renewable and biodegradable features.
